Interview with GM Kelly van Wieren

At the heart of New Zealand’s health and social service sector, Fraame Healthcare stands out as a trusted partner for organisations that deliver vital community care. The company specialises in developing and supporting client management systems designed to streamline operations, improve data accuracy, and ensure compliance all so providers can focus on what matters most: supporting people.

“Our goal is to make our clients’ jobs easier,” says Kelly van Wieren, General Manager at Fraame Healthcare. “We’re proud to work alongside people delivering vital social services, helping them simplify their day-to-day work and make a real difference in their communities.” For Kelly, the company’s success comes down to a shared purpose and strong relationships. “Everyone here has the same goal — to make our clients happy,” she says. “We understand how valuable their work is for our communities, and we all want to be part of that.”

What truly sets Fraame apart is the depth of understanding its team brings to the table. Many staff members have firsthand experience in healthcare, having worked in hospitals, laboratories, and private healthcare settings. “[Because] our staff come from health service backgrounds, we really understand what it means to work with the software,” says Kelly. “That insight helps us make the user experience as seamless as possible.”

Fraame’s expertise and collaborative approach are evident in projects like the recent case closure workflow enhancement. A feature designed to ensure clients are properly discharged from services with every required step completed. The update not only meets compliance and funder reporting needs but also improves the day-to-day experience for frontline practitioners. “After discussing what was needed, our team designed a process that allowed practitioners to start checking required items from day one,” recalls Kelly. “When we presented the proposed design, the feedback was immediate — practitioners described it as a ‘time saver,’ ‘sleek,’ and ‘just fabulous.’”

As technology continues to evolve, so does Fraame Healthcare. The company’s transition from Jade to HTML .Net opens the door to smarter automation, mobile accessibility, and improved integration with other software systems. “[This shift] means we can make our software even smarter — introducing automatic workflows, mobility, and the ability to integrate daily work practices,” says Kelly.

Her own journey with Fraame began more than two decades ago, when she joined the company seeking better work-life balance. “Twenty-one years ago, with a new family, I wanted a job that gave me the best balance,” she shares. “Leaving the CDHB to work for Fraame was the best move I’ve ever made. From starting as an Application Specialist to now helping manage the team, I can easily say I have a fulfilling job and the perfect balance.”

That experience has shaped her leadership philosophy. “The most valuable lesson I’ve learned as a leader is that success comes from empowering others,” she reflects. “When you trust people, give them the tools they need, and genuinely listen, they’ll often exceed your expectations. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about creating the conditions where others can thrive.”

Outside of work, Kelly enjoys spending time with her whānau, cheering at sports games, going for walks, or catching up over coffee. A self-proclaimed DIY enthusiast, she laughs that her dad’s motto — ‘why pay someone else if you can give it a go yourself?’ — still guides her today. “Sometimes it works out perfectly… and sometimes I learn that calling an expert isn’t such a bad idea after all!”

With that same spirit of curiosity, collaboration, and care, Fraame Healthcare continues to shape smarter, more connected systems helping the people who care for our communities do their best work, every day.
